Valuing People

Learning to be a leader is somewhat like learning to be a parent or a lover, your childhood and adolescence provide you with basic values and role models. Books can help you understand what’s going on, but experience is the best teacher (Hacker & Roberts, 2004).

Usually, the leadership role in the family goes to the older ones. They are the ones who teach and lead the family to where they should go. Usually, they are the ones who give lessons to be learned. We do not discount that, actually, we can trust family members who are older that they know what they are doing because they are more experienced in life. However, we all learn from each other.

As children learn from their elders; so do elders learn from their children. In Jim Selman’s book, Leadership, those retiring must be willing to consider that their legacy includes leaving the best of what they have learned – especially the qualities and ways of being that have made the biggest difference. They must see themselves as responsible for the future and be willing to let go of their authority and any pre-conceived ideas of what things “should” look like (Selman, 2007).

In the same way the younger generation learns from the older generation, the older generation also gets to learn about the changing times from the younger ones. We are not discounting the principles that the older generations have been passing around. However, we cannot also discount that there are also things to be learned from the younger generation.

The key here is humility. It is written in the bible, Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5).
