Aspects of the Covenant
In Numbers 10:32-39, the people of God speak of their covenant regarding the sanctuary and their obligations to give for the Temple.
32 If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the Lord gives us.”
33 So they set out from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest. 34 The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,
“Rise up, Lord!
May your enemies be scattered;
may your foes flee before you.”36 Whenever it came to rest, he said,
“Return, Lord,
to the countless thousands of Israel.”(Nehemiah 10:32-39 NIV)
Indeed, God is a God of Order, and when Nehemiah was organizing the people and reinstating their commitment with the temple, he distinguished the particulars. The theme of this chapter is about giving specifically for temple services. The Israelites had a unique problem with giving to the Lord’s work, which seemed like a common problem with all people, even up to this day. Many people would spend freely on their wants and needs, but they get offended when it comes to giving to the Lord’s work.
The Lord has been extravagant in blessing us. How would we feel if God is offended or stingy when it comes to His blessings to us? Maybe the sun won’t rise, or perhaps your loved one won’t awaken tomorrow. We neglect just how generous God is with us to the point wherein it’s audacious for us to give sparingly when He calls for a contribution for His work.
