There is a reason why God required many different kinds of offering. As human beings, our brains can only grasp so much abstract concepts. We are limited in our understanding. Rituals and traditions for the Israelites were done so that people have a concrete representation of the theological concepts that God wants us to understand. Thus, our experience of Christ can be classified into many items and can be typified by the five basic kinds of offerings: the burnt offering, the meal offering, the peace offering, the sin offering, and the trespass offering. These five offerings come in one form in the present age, which is through our generosity.

The Burnt Offering

When we learn to live by Jesus Christ, to take Christ as our life, the indwelling of Christ would enable us to live a life absolutely for the Lord and not for ourselves, the real experience of Christ as the burnt offering (Lev. 1:1-17). The indwelling of Jesus allows us not to live for ourselves alone, but to live for God in everything, including our finances. Christ becomes a living burnt offering within us as we live by Him, taking Him as our life.

“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me;

6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

7 Then I said, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will, O God’

(in the scroll of the book[b] it is written of me).” (Hebrews 10:5-7)

When we have this experience of Christ, we can offer what we have to the Lord. In fact, we are not just willing, but joyful and expectant in the process; not just expectant to receive a blessing but to experience the Lord. Declaring that our lives are set apart for the Lord, as well as giving praise, giving thanks, testimony or a message is the offering of Christ as the burnt offering. When we offer Him in such a way, He is exhibited, expressed and exalted.

The Meal Offering

As the meal offering (Lev. 2:1-16), we take Jesus in our lives and allow our behavior and conduct to be refined daily. We would be fine and pure in our humanity, like the fine flour of the meal offering. The offering is composed of fine flour mingled with oil. It also signifies how Christ lives in us so that we may have a proper, refined and balanced life — a lifestyle that produces a sweet aroma for the Lord and to mankind.

We go to church with a testimony or a praise report. We thank God for His faithfulness. People see our lives and realize that if they obey, they would also experience the same blessings. We may say, “Lord, we were sinful people, but thank You for becoming our meal offering. We can take You as our refined, even, balanced, and pure life.” If more of Christ lives in us day by day, we would not be consumed by what consumes this world. Materialism and greed are chipped away and replaced with contentment and generosity.
