Creation Exists in Your Language
Leaders have a role in leading the group into a new possibility; something that is different from the past and current situation of the group. Creating a future exists in language. It begins with the articulation of a vision. This new future is given birth in a conversation. The mere act of talking about a new possibility is already the birth of a new future. The lifeblood of leadership in one sense is the capacity for dialogue, for connection, for conversation. A leader or leadership team points to a different sense of what’s possible, in the same way that a painter or sculptor or poet can give people a different way of seeing.
It requires courage, taking a stand—not as a position against contrary forces, but as a commitment which becomes the chute down which a particular vision is realized. (Zaffron, 2013)
Let us look at the prophets in the Bible. When they prophesy, they are giving life to a conversation about something that is completely different from the current situation. The prophetic messages work like so, as they can be either giving hope or calling people to repentance. But the point is they are giving life to something that currently does not exist for the group.
In Isaiah 43:18-19, the prophet spoke about new beginnings, in the face of desolation: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in.” The Prophet Ezekiel talked about the possibilities of repentance: “But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die (Ezekiel 18:21).
