DUTIES AND PRIVILEGE OF THE PRIEST
In Numbers 18:1-7, the author enumerated the duties of the priests. They were to bear the iniquity of the sanctuary. The other Israelites were not allowed to approach the sanctuary. They were also to conduct the tabernacle services. In the present times, the job of the pastor is to minister specifically to the spiritual needs of people. They consider the priestly office as a gift to the priests (Num. 18:7).45
What did God command as the privilege of the priests? The priests are to have a portion of the offerings of the Israelites (Num. 18:8-19). Verse 8 gave a summary, while verses 9-19 gives a detailed statement of the offerings, which are to be given to the priests for their sustenance.
The wave offerings, a portion of the peace offering, the first fruit offerings, and the devoted-to-God-by-a-vow offerings of the Israelites are given to the priests and they may be consumed by any ceremonially clean member of the priest’s household (Num. 18:11-18). The firstborn of the men and the unclean beasts are to be redeemed through the payment of five shekels, and the redemption money is to be kept by the priests. The firstborn of clean sacrificial animals are to be sacrificed and the flesh eaten by the priests and their families, with the exception of the blood and the fat.
As mentioned, the priests do not have any portion of land, unlike the other Israelites. They were given 13 priestly cities to live in (Josh. 21:19), but they have no land for agriculture, and therefore they have no source of provision. The Lord is their inheritance because God would be the One to support them by giving them a portion of the sacred gifts of the Israelites.
