New Covenant vs. Old Covenant
What does a new covenant bring?
The new covenant gives more blessings to us than the old covenant can ever give. Nevertheless, it is a covenant that imposes a greater responsibility than that of the Old Testament. Case in point the passage below:
21 “You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told, ‘Do not commit murder. (Exodus 20:13). Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’ 22 But here is what I tell you. Do not be angry with a brother or sister. Anyone who is angry with them will be judged. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ must stand trial in court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire in hell. (Matthew 5:21-22)
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ (Exodus 20:14) 28 But here is what I tell you. Do not even look at a woman in the wrong way. Anyone who does has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:27-28)
In the Old Testament, you need to murder to be a murderer. However, in the New Testament, your anger constitutes the same sin. In the old covenant, you are not to commit adultery. However, in the New Testament, just looking at someone in the wrong way is already adultery in the heart.
Tithing in the New Testament
If we think that we’re off the hook from tithing in the New Testament, here’s the deal — the standards are stricter in the new covenant. If anything, the new covenant structure requires a more significant commitment to financial stewardship before God. It demands more than what old covenant laws needed. The tithe was just the starting point of Christian giving. The tithe is not an ideal that only a few people reach but rather should be the base minimum we progress. The widow gave it all — this was the ideal for Jesus (Mk 12:41-44).
