As children growing up, we often related obedience to being in bondage or being restricted to a set of do’s and don’ts. The older generation were in fear that if they obeyed, it would lead to their death (Num. 14:3). In reality, it was their unbelief that caused them to be stuck in the wilderness. Disobedience broke their relationship with God, and led them to death. Conversely, faith enables a person to obey God, and enjoy the freedom of His presence and fellowship with Him.

The goal of God’s regulation is not to destroy their lives, but to bless them. The problem that drove Israel’s sin pattern was their failure to believe that God is good, and as a result they distrusted Him. Faced with giants as enemies, the older generation of Israelites concluded that they would certainly die. In spite of the evidence of the first fruits of the land, Israel chose to believe the negative report. Unbelief would drive a person to disobedience. In the same way, the disbelief in the goodness of God would cause people to withhold their tithes and offering.
