Real Talk From Real-life Experience With The Millennials

Earlier, we mentioned that millennials gravitate to those whom they can relate to. Most are mum about their own experiences because they are afraid that they might be judged, bullied, or misinterpreted. So it is very hard to reach out to the core of the young ones. Its either you are in or out of their circle. No in-betweens.

If you try to observe, millennials in general are very hesitant to open up. They are very social beings, yes. But that doesn’t mean that engagement meant that you’ve already cracked them. The truth is, the young generation is very hard to crack. Perhaps that is the reason why there is a growing rate of depression in our society today, and most these cases are made up of millennials.

When you are relatable to them, the succeeding steps to reach them will be a lot easier. If they ask something, do your best to respond as honestly as possible. They will know if you are beating around the bush—and that is a no-no.

In the efforts of reaching out to the young generations, churches became more and more creative in their ways to be able to attract and keep the millennials engaged. And that is not a bad thing. What makes it ‘bad’ is when services turn into mini concerts and social gatherings rather than a spiritual gathering. The difference will always depend on the intention. If the church is being too consumed with the theatrics of the Sunday service, then there will come a point that these young ones will leave. Why? Because their spiritual thirst isn’t quenched.

In the efforts of reaching out to the young generations, churches became more and more creative in their ways to be able to attract and keep the millennials engaged.

David Appelt mentioned that if one continues such methods, one will groom this generation into church-loving people but not Christ-loving. What good does that do?

To address this, the church must be able to satisfy the youth’s craving for spiritual satisfaction in a truthful manner. Not with long sermons, not with extravagant mini-concerts posing as church service, but rather with teachings that are relatable to their current situation.

Create small groups and evangelize thru that. Plant seeds with other youngsters. Make the young ones invite their fellow. That is the best testament that you’ve done it right. Millennials don’t need constant pushing, most especially if they believe in the things they do.
