SELF-AWARENESS IS KEY
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
Self-awareness is key in understanding who and what we are. Looking at the story of the prodigal son, he misused the inheritance his father gave to him with strangers in a foreign land. He lost it all and became a slave to a different kind of life. He even admired the food that his master gave to his pigs. The son hit rock bottom. However, he came to himself and remembered that his father’s servants lived a better life than his (Lk. 15:17). With this realization, the son chose to go back to his father and seek his forgiveness. The moment we know where we stand, we can then learn how to act appropriately.
When dealing with addicts, they go through self-awareness where they need to admit who they are. In many situations, an addict will vehemently deny their condition, claiming that they have control of their habits, whether gambling, drinking, pornography, or drug abuse. In some cases, the person gets offended whenever a person shows concern about their condition. It is not until the person accepts their state that they can begin the process of rehabilitation. Similarly, a person with a money disorder is likely to deny a condition and claim control even when their ship is sinking.
