THE BIRTH OF JESUS WAS PROMISED
The Bible showcases prophecies of the birth of Jesus and of course, its fulfillment. Micah, an eighth century B.C. prophet, described the future of Bethlehem and its city giving birth to someone who is greater than their King David. “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village in Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past” (Mic. 5:2). The prophecy of Isaiah also mentions the birth of Jesus through a virgin in Isaiah 7:14, “All right then, the Lord Himself will choose the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call Him Immanuel – ‘God with us.’” It is easier to grasp the birth of Jesus now that we are reading about it through the Bible. But imagine how challenging it was to grasp the idea of a Messiah coming to save us. There were plenty of non-believers and skeptics who doubted the prophets, and yet the prophecies came to pass.
Why Do God’s People Need a Messiah?
Why do God’s people need a Messiah? A Savior? What are we being saved from? Genesis 3 tells us of the story of Adam and Eve and their temptation to disobey God. Their first sinful act against God created a gap between mankind and the Creator. Because God is a loving Father, He allows us to reconcile with Him through the promise of a Savior.
The fulfillment of the promise of Jesus was revealed in John 1. The scripture opens by telling the story of creation, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” The verse then goes on saying, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:14). These verses give us an understanding of who Jesus is and what he says and does in relation to God. When John mentions the Word, he speaks of it in passages as if it was a person. And so, it is revealed to us that Jesus himself is the Word that the scripture refers to.
The Birth of Jesus
The birth of Jesus was a miraculous event that fulfilled the prophecies of these prophets. We have read about his life in numerous books and Bible stories and have continuously studied his words when he preached in different cities. As prophesied in the book of Isaiah, Christ preached the Good News to the world, and he became the Savior of men by dying on the cross for our sins. I think it’s amazing that the hundreds of prophecies given over a span of hundreds of years were all fulfilled by Jesus. If God was able to do so in such an amazing way, then how much more the little things that He promises to us?
