THE BOLDNESS OF THE DIVINE LIGHT
Christ referred to the economy of God’s eternal light and its orientation to all men by this ministry as “a city on a hill.” If we deem it correct that we are regarded as Christians, then no one should doubt that we are actually who we say we are—followers of Jesus Christ. A light in the darkness sticks out, hence cannot be ignored, and it is in this way that we are to be in the world — unique and set apart for the ministry of God.
The boldness of the divine light acquired by following Christ’s light can be exemplified in various ways, most especially by defending Christ against His accusers. The light which burns in our souls is a weapon that can dispel the enemy of darkness, “For the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ” (II Cor. 10:4-5).
If we don’t acquire Christ’s light, we will fail to express the godly boldness witnessed in the ministry of the apostles, inarguably filled with Christ’s divine light. The apostles proclaimed “the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance” (Acts 28:31 ESV, emphasis added). Without first acquiring God’s light through Christ, such bold proclamations are impossible. Furthermore, the divine light empowers us to approach the throne of God boldly, “in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him” (Eph. 3:12 ESV). Paul writes, “Since we have such a hope, we are very bold” in referring to the promises of God and his bestowing of the divine light upon His followers (II Cor. 3:12). With this divine light, we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:6).
