THE WORK OF THE LORD AND LEADERS

The work of the Lord can be done more effectively when good leaders are in place. The leaders of the land were largely responsible for the people’s conduct. Nehemiah, as Tirshatha, was a good leader in such a way that he took the initiative to write his name first on the reform-document, and then influencing the other nobles to set their names to the instrument.61 The reforms in Numbers 10 indicated pressing matters, such as marriage alliances, the observance of Sabbath, usury, temple-taxes, and tithes. These points were brought up to address what was concerning for the people. One of which was the fact that their covetousness undermined their piety, and the integrity of their nation.

When a nation neglects the work of the Lord, the foundations of society are shaken.

When a nation neglects the work of the Lord, the foundations of society are shaken. The Lord promises protection and favor over the nation who obeys Him. The moral tone of any people can only be cultivated and sustained when the leaders have a system. It’s not because you want to operate under the Law, but it’s because you want to have the best life for you and your people. When it’s okay for people to neglect the work of God, natural depravity creeps in. Moreover, the lack of self-control would take over.

True devotion for the Lord must be carefully cared for and sustained in this sin-infested world. The zeal of Nehemiah and other reformers through the establishment of the temple is a wise example to those who would come after them. When it is the state that would enforce such devotion, public opinion can be made. The status quo would support the work of the Lord.

Sometimes, the community looks to their leaders for wisdom, guidance, and discipline in order to fulfill their devotions to the Lord. When the leader supports the work of the Lord, the people will eventually follow. On the other hand, when you have a wicked ruler, the bearing of the people for worship will become uncertain. When the leaders of the nation are wicked, it’s up to the church leaders to preserve the worship practices of the believers.
