WHAT GOD SEES IN THE ORDINARY
God’s standards are higher than ours. However, when we examine the way He chooses people for His purpose, you can see how He selects commoners for His purpose. He does not select the elite or the wealthy. As Paul puts it:
26 Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, 29 so that no one might boast in the presence of God. (1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NRSV)
When you compare the marketplace with the church, you will discover that it makes more sense to label the latter “holy” and the other “unholy,” the latter “sacred” and the former “worldly.” The passage above highlights how God uses the simple-minded, not the pundit class. The lowly have leverage in advancing the Kingdom of God because God has a history of using the underdog to advance his cause.
Paul pointed out how this principle was true in how the early Christian church operated. The upper class were not as involved in this movement, because pride of birth or education prevented them from involving themselves in said movement. Moreover, the timidity of wealth caused them to take a backseat in the formation of the early church. In bringing in a new order of things, God uses simple people to gain leverage to spread Christianity.
According to Paul, boasting is a basic human attitude. However, responding with humility is a more spiritual attitude. The lowly operate in a space of nothingness. It is because of this state of mind and lifestyle that they can become perfect recipients of the grace of God. It is not that God is only close to those who are poor materially; it is the status of the person’s heart that must be humble and empty. When a person’s heart is not empty, when its affections are set on so many things other than God, then this person has a hard time hearing from God. When a person is puffed up in his spirit, thinking he has much knowledge, then his or her listening is closed or limited. In Jesus’ time, the lowly were open to receive Jesus into their lives.
