BELIEFS AND CONVICTIONS: THE MONEY SCRIPTS IN YOUR LIFE
Beliefs and convictions vary across people. These differences develop over time depending on the societal background, education, religion, and culture. A child is likely to build their belief system depending on the immediate environment where they grew up, and it affects their character and actions even as adults. We may not realize it, but our most minute beliefs stem from our backgrounds as children—from what we see parents doing to what we learn in school.
According to John Locke (1690), the mind of a child is malleable. Locke described a child’s mind as a “tabula rasa” or blank slate. As the child grows and develops, they pick values, virtues, and vices from their caregivers. The child’s first lesson on money probably came from the parent, whether deliberately or not.
If you had the power to make your mind a blank slate once again and unlearn everything about money, what are the primary lessons or mindsets you want to set for it and why?
The unconscious beliefs about money that determine our thoughts, emotions, and choices about our finances are called Money Scripts. If you wish to know where your money mindset came from, take a trip down memory lane. Can you recall a specific memory you have about money growing up? For example, it can be receiving a dollar in a Christmas card from your grandparent, or your dad saying “no” to buying a new toy, etc. How do you think this impacted your view on money?
Write down 3-5 money behaviors that you observed your parents or guardians practicing during your childhood. Circle the behaviors you practice as an adult.
How is this money story sabotaging your success?
Put numbers to it! Which is causing you more in your life?
Take action. What can you do to course-correct? Write five small steps you can do to address these identified behaviors.
