When building relationships with Millennials, it is important to understand them. Contrary to popular perception, the millennial generation is a very diverse group. It would be very hard to categorize and describe them as a single unit.
Most of the older generations fall into the mistake of generalizing how the millennials think, react, and do their own thing. Realizing that early on would be very beneficial in the success of one being able to reach out to the younger segment of society.
Most of the older generations fall into the mistake of generalizing how the millennials think, react, and do their own thing.
But if you’ve fallen into this trap, what you need to address, first and foremost, is to truly understand this generation. Cliché as it may seem, but there is more to them than what meets the eye. Earlier, we’ve learned that this generation is highly curated by their parents to grow into someone who should be successful, independent, and as much as possible live an abundant life.
By knowing this and being able to correctly profile the generation, it would be easier to connect to them.
Bear in mind that millennials value authenticity and they would rather emulate their mentors, rather than people who project authority just because of seniority.
Professional speaker and business communication expert, Jill Schiefelbein (2016) shared in an article that in her 11-year experience as an undergrad communications teacher, she noticed there has been a major shift with students. Their view on the value of education, the manner in how they communicate with their peers and teachers, and how they handle the information given to them was far from usual. She described it as something different.
Millennials choose to work for an institution wherein they feel they matter.
Same with Schiefelbein, the millennials were a complete mystery to everyone else. This mystery is rapidly growing in numbers and continuously evolving in nature. But humans being such curious beings, it wasn’t long until studies on this generation began. And because of the merits of the generational patterns that were presented by the likes of Howes and Strauss, it is now safe to say that the generation shift has started.
Before, people chose jobs primarily because of the salary. It is the money and the need for it that motivates people. Now, it has become about more than just financial benefits. Millennials choose to work for an institution wherein they feel they matter. They also prefer to be with companies that have an impact on society. Relationships matter in the church.
Sermons and lectures are already a thing of the past. Church leaders need to innovate if they want to retain those who are still with them and attract new ones.
Whether it’s a job, an organization, or a church, their general preference remains the same. To be able to connect with the millennials, its leaders must be able to translate The Word to the level that would be appealing to them in the 21st century. Sermons and lectures are already a thing of the past. Prophetic church leaders need to innovate if they want to retain those who are still with them and attract new ones. Millennials will soon be the leaders and front runners of society.
The wise thing to do is make sure you’ve got them in your backyard as early as now. Making one more appealing to the younger generation doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have to do a total make-over. The key to building relationships with Millennials is a good balance between the traditional method and adapting new and ‘lit’ ways. Evolve. Embrace the change and soon you’ll see results.
