Four Generational Archetypes
That way of life against which my generation rebelled had given us grim courage, fortitude, self-discipline, a sense of individual responsibility, and a capacity for relentless hard work.
Rose Wilder Lane
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me,
Deuteronomy 5:9 NRSV
The changing generational personalities
Throughout history, scholars have found recurring patterns of personas that develop and emerge depending on generational milestones. These people naturally gravitate towards those who share similar experiences and they are most likely born in the same period in history.
Neil Howe and William Strauss once concluded an obvious truth, saying that the experiences one gets during early childhood play a huge part in the formation of his attitude, which is then carried on towards adulthood. They also added that apart from the early childhood transformation, everyone also undergoes a similar formative period which happens during early adulthood. How one handles challenges during this period greatly says about how one approaches life in general.
The experiences one gets during early childhood plays a huge part in the formation of his attitude.
It is good to note that there are mindset changes that happen which separates each generation and those changes happen roughly between a 20-year interval. To illustrate, think of how high school couples decide on how to deal with their ‘first big step’:
Couples in the 1950s prefer to take on the sacrament of marriage first before getting engaged into something more intimate. Couples from the 1970s, on the other hand, would prefer to get ‘high’ before doing the deed. Take note that is during this era that the use of hallucinogenic plants was very rampant. In the 1990s, couples wanted to have their partners tested for HIV first for the fear of getting the virus during intercourse. From the example, it is very evident that every generation had their own set of priorities. The generational differences become clear as we examine them over a period of time.
