Generosity should flow from the heart. Scripture states that whoever sows generously will reap generously (2 Cor. 9:6). However, it is not only about generosity—the state of the heart matters. First, anyone giving must do it out of their willingness, rather than through coercion or out of necessity. Generosity is not just about the amount, as scripture shows, but about the heart’s motive. While money worship encourages generosity as a show of love, let the intent of your heart remain pure. You don’t have to be generous to prove a point.

Would you consider yourself a generous person? If yes, what is the motive of your generosity?

Examine your giving pattern—how often did you give when it’s inconvenient?

Can you comfortably give a large donation to a church, an individual, or an organization without making your identity known?

Do you give to feel secure or give because you are confident?

LET YOUR MONEY HAVE A PURPOSE

Most people believe that simply making more money will solve their money problems, but it only causes more significant money problems in most cases. Apart from taking control of your spending, you need to take control of your cash flow. Otherwise, making more money will create more problems for you. With more money problems, your money worship disorder establishes the need to work harder for more money. This leads to future health complications and less time spent with family.

Spending with a purpose reduces the habit of emotionally connecting through spending. In reality, money cannot buy love—just temporary loyalty. Look at the prodigal son. When you make it a habit to always spend on friends and people, the chances are that you create financial dependency. People start depending on you for their financial needs. Economic dependence saps peoples ambition and sense of autonomy and can leave them feeling lost and helpless in the world. You create a money problem for your friends and loved ones, thinking you are showing them, love.
