SOW YOUR SEED AND DO NOT EAT IT

SOW YOUR SEED AND DO NOT EAT IT

Financial peace isn’t the acquisition of stuff. It’s learning to live on less than you make so you can give money back and have money to invest. You can’t win until you do this.

– Dave Ramsey

Sowing is not as difficult as reaping.

– Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Power Truth

6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.

Ecclesiastes 11:6

Don’t eat all your seeds.

Sow your seed as the Bible states in Ecclesiastes. The old farmers had a proverb that went something like this: “Don’t eat your seed corn.” In other words, this indicates that any readily available seed can either be consumed or planted in preparation for the subsequent harvest. As a result, we have to make confident that our farm possesses a sufficient quantity of seed corn to replant our land. You must sow your seed and not eat it. This way, we can appreciate the harvest that has just occurred and ensure that we will have something to look forward to and value during the harvest that transpires the following year. If we don’t cultivate it, the land will waste away, and our loved ones will go hungry.

The old financial adage “don’t eat your seed corn” is analogous to “don’t use up your capital.” When applied to finance, both phrases mean the same thing: when you spend something, you are giving up the item itself and everything that object could produce in the future. This is encapsulated in the fundamental truth that you are giving up everything when you spend something. For example, this implies that paying an entire ten-dollar bill means giving up not only that ten-dollar bill but also all of the possible dividends and interests it could have earned now and in the months or years to come if you had invested that amount or deposited it in the bank instead of spending it.
