God’s Glory & Blessings = Bountiful Harvest
Old Testament references are usually in the context of agriculture. They talk about crop production and festivals of Thanksgiving. as an illustration, metaphors about harvest often represent God’s blessings. Reaping a good harvest is a blessing from God. It is a blessing from being obedient.
18 You shall observe my statutes and faithfully keep my ordinances, so that you may live on the land securely. 19 The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live on it securely. 20 Should you ask, “What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not sow or gather in our crop?” 21 I will order my blessing for you in the sixth year, so that it will yield a crop for three years. 22 When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating from the old crop; until the ninth year, when its produce comes in, you shall eat the old.(Leviticus 25:18-22, emphasis added by author)
God guarantees a promise for your obedience. Jesus is the Amen and when God says He will do something, He will do it, not because we deserve it, but because of Jesus. All we need to do is to trust God. When we trust God, our actions will follow. Jesus is the guarantee for God’s faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit seals this faith in our hearts.
Obedience and Blessings
In the chapter after the passage above, the Lord tells the people that their obedience guarantees that rain will come in its due season, the land will yield her increase, and the trees will bear fruit (Lev. 26:2-4). Essentially, the Lord promises provision and prosperity in the right time is guaranteed if you choose to obey God’s commandments.
Spiritual and material benefits are enjoyed by those who obey God. Blessing the name of God is a natural response when we realize just how much God has given us. His promises can overwhelm us with gratitude. However, the problem is we are not aware of everything God desires for us to have. Everything is the Lord’s and everything in it (Psa. 89:11). In the verse below, we recognize how God is the source of all blessings.
11 Yours, O Lord, are the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might; and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all.(1 Chronicles 29:11-12)
The Removal of God’s Blessing
The disobedience of Adam and Eve caused God to remove his blessing (Gen. 3:16-19). The glory of God is so foreign for us because we are used to living in sin. On the other hand, God’s blessings surpass any curse He can ever carry out. God’s blessings include descendants and nations (Gen. 12:2-3). Moreover, God’s blessings include land, which we can relate to prosperity and abundance in today’s context (Gen. 17:8, Gen. 12:7, Deut. 1:8, Deut. 11:8-12). The blessings of God also include good health and a long life (Exo. 23: 25-26). Also, blessings can also manifest in victory and peace (Exo. 23;22; Lev. 26:6-8). Finally, God also promises the blessing of future restoration (Jer. 31:23).
What are the conditions of God’s blessings? What must we do to release God’s glory into our lives. First, we must fear the Lord (Jer. 32:40) and obey God (Deut. 11:26-28). Our worship and adoration also release the glory of God (Neh. 9:5). People can also bless one another in the name of the Lord. They can release the glory of God upon other people’s lives by declaring a blessing (Num. 6:24-26; Gen. 27:27-29).
