CONSECRATING THE WORLD TO CHRIST
This book has previously addressed two points: that we live in an industrialized society and that the entire earth and all of its inhabitants are God’s. Reconcile these points will bring us to their implications for our lives; moreover, they will reveal how we are called to consecrate the modern world—industrialized or not—to God.
Our lives, certainly infused with capitalism and commercialism, must exist today. To dispel both capitalism and commercialism entirely from the social landscape will be difficult; therefore, as Christians, we must consecrate this way of life back to God. If industries are to build and produce, then they must do so for God’s glory. If wealth is to be acquired, then one must acquire it for the same reason. The world needs to be Christianized to satisfy the Great Commission, and eventually to offer the world back to God.
As Rauschenbusch’s notes, “Industry ought to exist for the support of life.” Sadly, what happens is the reverse. If helping the poor will interest businessmen, then such action is undertaken. Unfortunately, the rich think giving help to the needy provides will not benefit them, hence large corporate entities rarely work to alleviate poverty out of the Christian spirit of compassion.
The enormous difference between first-world and third-world countries proves of how we have miserably failed to love others as we love ourselves.
Dr. Robert Wafawanaka notes such a case among Africans. According to him, “Traditionally, African families dealt with poverty in a communal way. Poverty was often mitigated by survivalist creativity on the part of the poor, communal spirit and social solidarity, sharing of resources, and above all, the care and support of the extended family. However, more recently, poverty has threatened to wipe out the family and entire generations of people especially due to the ravages of preventable diseases.” Christianity is a social movement called by their God to alleviate such preventable diseases in order to legitimately and authentically love others as ourselves.
The Church’s involvement in societal issues should be impactful since we represent Christ in our ministry and are living testimonies to those around us. The individual laity and clergy should essentially think about the relationship between the church and the world, including the consecration of the world to Christ. We must offer before God ourselves as a living sacrifice and labor to make this world good by loving our neighbors and enemies alike, caring for the poor, and fulfilling the requirements James conveyed for a pure and undefiled religion.
