Aspects of the Covenant Part 5

Percentage in Giving

The word “first” shows up many times. It emphasizes the people’s preference to prioritize God’s work first. The tithe was not only the giving the people were to do. The tithe was only part of their giving. Before the tithe was mentioned, there were also firstfruit offerings (Neh. 10:37).

Nehemiah mentioned the tithe in the covenant. This literally means “the tenth part.” They gave one-tenth of their abundance unto the Lord. The source of abundance was the Lord. Let me repeat, we are expected to give our tithe, but our giving is not limited to that. Our tithe does not include our târumah and other offerings. Are you cringing already? Don’t. You can never out-give the Lord if you give from a pure heart!

Priority in Giving

What did the leader say? “We will not forsake the house of our God” (Neh. 10:39). 69Nehemiah took responsibility. The Jews were in hard times. Nehemiah would not tax them to support his office because of such hard times (Neh. 5:18). However, this was not about government. It was about the work of the Lord. The work of the Lord is not defined by the nation’s economy. What would happen to America if the nation’s leader declared, “We will not forsake the house of our God!”

Giving to the Lord came naturally to the believer. It is a non-issue because the they trusted the Lord. They understood that God blesses them first before they can give to the work
