Spiritual and Material Wealth
Spiritual prosperity and material prosperity are both desirable in our walk with God. The Apostle John wrote, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” (3 Jn. 2 KJV). John went on to describe some of the good works that Gaius did for the evangelists and the fellow workers in the Lord. Gaius would have been unable to accomplish them if he had been homeless or poverty-stricken.
God is Pleased with Your Prosperity
God shows us in this verse that He wants us to do well in everything. John would not pray for something that would go against what the Lord wants. John prayed for Gaius’s success because God wanted him to do well. This is true for everyone who serves the Lord, not just for Gaius. In Psalm 35:27, it says that the Lord is happy when His servant does well.
The state of the soul is the key to wealth. What is the state of your soul? God wants to change the way we think (Rom. 12:2). If our minds are earthly and we want bad things, then it’s true that prosperity would hurt us more than help us. We already know from the Book of Proverbs that the wicked spend their money on sin. Also, the Book of Proverbs says that the work of the good brings life.
The Trap of Worrying
We live in a fallen world, and it is easy to fall into the trap of worrying and coveting more things. The Holy Spirit renews our minds. If our minds are sufficiently refreshed and continued through the grace of God, then we will recognize the will of God. There is a purpose for this prosperity. We often flatter ourselves thinking we see it from God’s perspective when we are foolish. We need to go after God’s wisdom to prosper, which includes gaining spiritual and natural knowledge and applying ourselves diligently to our work or whatever God has given us to do.
