Knowing Depression

It is normal to feel sadness, everyone experiences it. More often than not, sadness comes more frequently than we think. Tons of factors, whether they may be internal or external forces, can contribute to a person’s unhappiness and sometimes sadness comes for no reason at all.

Not to confuse unhappiness with depression, as they differ greatly with each other. Depression, a common mental disorder, is usually characterized by longer and deeper feelings of hopelessness that affects one’s ability to carry out a normal life. There is a growing number of studies that find that depression is an illness with a biological basis. It is more common for individuals with close relatives who have been or are depressed. It is still certain that other psychological and social factors also play a vital role and have severe implications of this illness. Depression can be life-threatening with suicide as the most possible outcome.

To have someone who genuinely listens and cares for you can make a great difference for a person who is depressed.

Many with this illness are left untreated or ignored. Because of social constructs and judgment, up to this day people still find it hard to get out of the stigma that surrounds depression.
