THE NEED FOR SELF-ACTUALIZATION

Become What You Can Be

The need for self-actualization is described by Abraham Maslow in his hierarchy of needs. To be self-actualized, you have to “become what you can be.” Self-actualization is a goal that Maslow says we must reach. We can look around and there are lists of things we can use as a guide to look for people who have reached self-actualization.

• Reality-centered: Differentiating between fake and real, dishonesty and truth.
• Means-focused: Not seeking just the end but enjoying the journey.
• Problem-centered: Focusing on solving problems not bemoaning one’s troubles.
• Self-sufficient: Not needing the company of others.
• Deep relationships: What connections they have with others are deep and meaningful.
• Autonomy: Not being driven by the deeper needs.
• Socially aloof: Not being driven by social pressures.
• Open humor: Able to laugh at themselves and life in general.
• Acceptance: Accepting self and others without judgment.
• Simplicity: Being themselves without pretense.
• Spontaneity: Reacting as themselves without pause to worry.
• Respect: Accepting others as they are.
• Humility: Not trying to be superior to others.
• Ethical: A personal sense of right and wrong.
• Openness: Being able to see things in new ways.
• Creative: Easy identification of new ideas.
• Peak experience: Achieving that state of nirvana.

It’s Not About Perfection

Maslow did also note that such people are not saints and have their own imperfections, such as: 

• Strong feelings of anxiety or guilt about what they should or should not do, or what they have done.
• Being excessively kind even to people who may not deserve it.
• Being cold and ruthless when they felt something needed doing.

Remember that self-actualizing is very different from having lower needs and that self-actualizers are a type of person, as well. There are some people who live their lives in a state of self-actualization even when their lower needs are not met (The need for self-actualization, n.d.).

To solve problems, you have to go through Self-Actualization. In this stage, you are trying to figure out how to deal with any problems that come up. You are focusing on your goals and doing the right things to reach them, which is how you will get there.

It’s not just about how much money you make, but how well you do your job and stay focused on your goals. Having a business is a risk and reward. You need to study and think of ways to improve your business. A lot of your hard work will go to waste if you aren’t focused and can’t do the right things. Always stick to your plan. Keep your mind on the task at hand and have a positive attitude every day and with every step that you take, too.
