THE PURPOSE OF SALT
THE PURPOSE OF SALT
What is the purpose of salt? In Leviticus 2:13, the commandment was for every offering to be seasoned with salt. Like mentioned before, salt was an important part of the offering because it spoke of purity, preservation, and expense. Every sacrifice offered to God must be pure, enduring, and must cost something.94
As a preservative, the salt symbolized how the normal operations of the flesh can be controlled. It is the nature of the flesh to spoil. However, salt-cured meats stay good enough to consume. When you offer something that is pure, enduring and of value to the Lord, you are restraining your fleshly desires and tendencies.
Salt can also symbolize friendship. Ancient custom would show us that a bond of friendship was established through eating salt.95 Once you’ve eaten a man’s salt, you were his friend for life. Using something culturally relevant, God wanted every sacrifice to have salt to remind them of an everlasting relationship.
The salt of the covenant with God has specific characteristics.
The salt of the covenant with God has specific characteristics. First, it is a pure covenant. Salt has the ability to stay pure. How can we be the salt of the earth? A lot of Christians overlook the meaning of being “salt” and focus on being the “light” (Mt. 5:13-16) chemical compound even being mixed with other elements. Secondly, salt represents an enduring covenant. Salt preserves things and make them endure. Thirdly, salt is a valuable covenant. As mentioned, salt has been an expensive commodity. Maybe it’s not like that today because of modern technology, but in the absence of a freezing system, it was the only way people preserved things, like food. According to Charles Spurgeon, “By which was meant that it was an unchangeable, incorruptible covenant, which would endure as salt makes a thing to endure, so that it is not liable to putrefy or corrupt.”
